Abstract: We compare systematically the occurrence of HI absorption in compact 
and larger objects, study its distribution and evolution of properties with source age. 
These results along with the recently discovered 21-cm absorption towards the core 
of radio galaxy 3C452 will be discussed in the light of observations at other wavelengths.
